My interest in beads
Hi to all the bead enthusiast. I am new to the group and would like to share my life with beads with you.
I started beading in 1998, on a trip to Las Vegas and when I look back its hard to believe that I traveled from South Africa to get hooked on beads in Las Vegas. Always crafty and arty I tried my hand at whatever craft and called myself a professional craft student as I went to every craft class available. When I started bead weaving I finally found my niche and still cannot get…

Spring Around the Corner Challenge Entry
I finally finished my Spring around the Corner entry and although I didn't use the big lilly that I made I had a lot of fun making the other flowers that I used in my necklace. I was walking around Vancouver and found that the crocuses, daffodils and cherry blossoms were already blooming. I decided to use these…

The Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer
"The Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer" is an expression that I have been hearing since I was a little girl. I would just love to hear about the person who created it. Did you have any Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer this summer. I think there are many of us who would be interested in hearing about them. In any event, I hope you did get to have one or two this summer. I spent a lot of time learning bead stitching this summer. I love doing it because there are so many endless possibilities. I will be…

Need some Inspiration
The past several weeks I've had so many great ideas of pieces to make. When the time comes to sit down and do it, my mind is all over the place. Sometimes I think I should make something that I am familiar with or try something new. I've been practicing bead weaving and was wondering if anyone has some tips on how to get started on a bead weave cuff? Should I use a grid and plan it out or free hand? Is there anything that inspires you to design your jewelry? What do you do when you can't make… Continue

Blog About My Blog
Whew! I have spent the last few days reading other's beaders blogs online. Not only are they from great beaders, many are great writers, too. Some are like journals of day to day happenings and some are absolutely packed with information. Of course I get side-tracked by links they've added and before I know it, I've been sitting here on the computer for hours. I never cease to be amazed at how sites like Beaders Showcase, Facebook and personal blogs have put us all together. (I have yet to get… Continue

So many wonderful beads from the past!
Since I started my adventure in recreating historic glass beads, I seem to have been pulled further and further down an amazing rabbit hole!
Recreations of Egyptian faience beads circa 1bc-4ad
I can't believe the intricacy of some of the styles that were created well over two thousand years ago!
One of my favourite designs are the Phoenician Head Beads, these would have been worn to ward off evil, the eyes being the important part… Continue

Recreating ancient beads – Islamic Folded
My desire to recreate Viking beads has led me to spending hours looking at pictures of ancient beads online.
Most of the beads I see are not Viking at all but come from many different cultures, continents and ages.
Many of them are so beautiful that I am finding a growing excitement at the thought of trying to recreate them.
One type that keeps cropping up are the Islamic folded beads. Typically they contain stripes of… Continue

Blue and White Bead Set by May
The first thing that came to mind when I saw this bead set by May was an image of a fine Ming vase. Maybe not quite relevant, but it just gave me that feeling of Eastern mystery.

Silicone Carbide for cleaning glass beads
Here's a tip for lampworkers who hate cleaning beads and can never get them as clean as they'd like.
I just got myself some Silicone Carbide (ebay). It's the same stuff that the black sandpaper is coated with, I got a medium grit, which is finer than sand. When you've removed your bead from the mandrel, dip the mandrel in water then in the silicone carbide (you don't need much on the mandrel). Ream out the bead with the dipped mandrel - the silicone carbide does a great job of cleaning out… Continue
