"Where beading artists meet to show and tell."
When I first made this piece, I was under the impression that it was called Clump Embroidery and that it was an old Iroquois stitch. I should have done more research; I found out later that it was called raised embroidery and was not done by the Iroquois at all, but it is a type of raised beadwork that was done by the Mohawk from the Montreal area. No matter what it is called, I love the look of it, and it is so fun and easy to do. I used mainly 11/0 seed beads, with some silver delicas and copper colored 15/0's to bezel the large faux turquoise focal. The peach colored accent beads are 12/0. The rope is a simple spiral. I love woven ropes for necklaces over chains.
I first discovered Native American beading while trying to discover my roots. All my life I've been told I look "Indian", but my father grew up in NE Oklahoma in the early 1900's and it was not a good thing to have Indian blood so he denied it his whole life. I was never able to find any proof of my heritage until my grandfather passed away and in his things I found old photos of my father when he was about 3 and he was standing in front of some elder relatives. On the back of the photo's was the name of his great grandmother who definitely had Indian blood, but otherwise, no legitimate proof. So, I will continue to search and to enjoy making Native American style jewelry and maybe someday I will find the information I need.
